Choose clay for your day

Lesley Boerio

Just mention the word clay, and the dulcet tones of Bobby Hatfield begin drifting through my mind. That scene in ‘Ghost’ forever transformed the act of clay making into the most seductive and romantic expression of craft, so it only felt natural that when thinking of a way to tell our story through art, we looked no further than L&Clay Ceramics.

L&Clay Ceramics, naturally embodies the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, celebrating the beauty found in organic form, texture, and subtle imperfection. Whether a decorative trinket to grace the cake table or thoughtful gifts for your wedding party, a handcrafted ceramic is a beautiful and unique way to share your personal love story.

Tell us the story behind L&Clay - how did it begin?
I’d been freelance for about 5 years and had decided to take Fridays off to take some time for myself, including signing up for a ceramics class. I absolutely loved it and 2 and a half hours a week soon became not long enough. I joined the same studio as a member and started selling my pieces on Glassette.com and haven’t looked back since!

How did you start creating bespoke pieces for weddings?
I always welcome commissions and a lady emailed me asking for a bespoke wedding plate. They’d met in Whitstable so that had to be incorporated in the design. It felt really special to be asked to create such a unique piece.

How do you collaborate with couples to ensure each piece reflects their personalities or love story? I like to keep it quite simple and find that asking how they met can bring up a great story to include. Favourite songs and key wedding colours are also a must to tie everything together.

Have you noticed any trends or recurring themes in what couples are requesting lately?
There’s definitely a trend for handmade items, having something completely unique for the big day. As well as ceramic wedding plates I’ve been asked to present the wedding breakfast menu onto a keepsake piece which is an idea that I just love.

Do you have a favourite piece or project you’ve created for a wedding?
Obviously yours!! it’s so special to create an item for a friend, a huge huge honour!

A quote from a stranger on our chance meeting 7 years ago.

If you could design a ceramic piece for any celebrity couple, who would it be and why?
Who’s Kate Moss seeing these days? I’d make her a ceramic piece in a heartbeat! Ultimate cool client

What’s your favourite part of a wedding day?
The speeches!

Describe your perfect table setting - what would it include? I’ll send you a picture I saw on instagram. It’s perfect!
